I wish to prove two points: first that temptation is the invitation to sin and not a sin in of itself. And secondly that it is possible to reject any temptation through a sincere and genuine faith in Jesus Christ
First point: Temptation is the invitation to sin
The bible says that Jesus was led into the desert in order to be tempted by the devil and that he was tempted in every way we are, yet without sin.
Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. - Mat 4:1-2
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. - Hebrew 4:15
If temptation were a sin, then Jesus would be a sinner; because he was tempted. But we know that Jesus was without sin, and therefore his temptations must necessarily not have been sin. And if facing temptation was not a sin for Jesus, then neither it is a sin for anyone else to face temptation.
Moreover, the bible says in Genesis Chapter 3 that original sin was the choice to consume the forbidden fruit.
So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. - Genesis 3:6
Sin itself then is something more than mere temptation. Adam and Eve were thrown out of the garden because they participated in the experiential knowledge of evil. It’s not that they were tempted by the devil, but that they chose to consume what was evil.
But God does not leave us alone to face the devil and with every temptation we have an avenue of escape through faith in Jesus Christ.
Second point: In Christ we may reject any temptation
The bible says that Jesus is able to help those who are facing temptation, because he was tempted in every way that we are. And, that with every temptation, God provides an avenue of escape.
For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. - Hebrew 2:18
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. - 1 Cor 10:13
Jesus has overcome every temptation that is common to man. And so when Christ comes to live within a man, then it is by this same authority that we can also overcome temptation.
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.- Luke 10:19
The authority to reject temptation comes from a genuine communion with Christ. It is a mystical and spiritual reality in which the Holy Spirit comes to live within a man.
The flesh is weak, but when Christ comes to live within, then it his power and his authority which is strong. And it’s by the authority of Christ that man may crush scorpions, break snares and reject any temptation.
If we sin, there remains hope for us. There is grace for us. And God’s grace is truly bigger than any sin. And it is by God’s grace that through repentance that we may come into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
